In 2015 I couldn’t get off the couch. I was fatigued, unmotivated, gaining weight, and just not feeling like myself.
I was 6 months postpartum and thought that maybe this was normal as a new mom? Or maybe I was just going crazy.
Unfortunately, I was embarrassed to go to the doctor because I really did think my symptoms were possibly “normal”. It wasn’t until I collapsed at the gym that I took things seriously and decided to go get checked out. My doctor ran a whole bunch of labs and called me back into her office to go over the results…
“You have an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. There is no cure, and you will need to take medication daily for the rest of your life. Thankfully, it’s not too serious and you’ll feel better on some levothyroxine!” - these were my doctor's words to me, and I left her office that day feeling betrayed by my body.
I cried and cried for days as I began researching what I could do to help myself alongside taking the meds. The internet quickly became overwhelming and I became more and more fearful for my future fertility.
I remember going back to my doctor a few weeks later and asking my doctor if cutting out gluten would help. She laughed and said, “nothing you do with food will help! If you’re worried about your weight, try cutting back on the carbs and maybe do more cardio!”
Defeated, again, I gave up for a while. It was too overwhelming and depressing and I didn’t even want to think about it.
Thankfully, if you’ve been following my journey, you know that I didn’t give up for long and eventually I found my calling by fighting my diagnosis.
I’ll do part 2 later, but know this: your feelings upon being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s are valid. So many women ride the rollercoaster of emotions upon hearing about their autoimmune disease. That being said, don’t be like me and let it defeat you! Fighting back is one of the greatest things I’ve done to show my daughters how to build endurance.
I now own my functional nutrition and personal training company that specializes in helping women with Hashimoto’s regain their energy and lose stubborn body fat while optimizing their metabolism! There is hope, my friend!
For a customized functional nutrition plan, workouts, lab analysis (I’ll even order yo
